Christmas in the Caribbean

White Christmas? I don't think so!
Christmas in the Caribbean

My Christmas looked a little different this year...

🎄
First, we wrapped up the semester with lots of Christmas joy! Student Christmas parties, staff Christmas parties, a big ol' Christmas concert celebrating Christ—it was delightful! The Christmas concert in particular was pretty special. Our students did an amazing job presenting the story of Christ to their parents and the whole community through music and plays.

❄️
Then winter break arrived! I decided to stay and rest here in the DR. The coldest it ever got over break was low 50s, which feels freezing when you're acclimated to warm tropical weather!

While I didn't get to see snow, I did get to do some fun stuff!
🐸
I found this cool frog on my porch, visited the big city with one of my friends who also stayed over break, and acquired some lettuce plants! Pretty exciting, I know!

Not pictured: I got to play in a ping pong tournament at a game night with some other missionary families who stayed. I won second place!

Also not pictured: I felt a little homesick and missed my family a lot.

A huge privelege...

My biggest highlight over break was getting to spend both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve with one of my best friends, Jean-Carlos, and his extended family!

As I, a total gringo, sat at the table sharing dinner with 12 Dominican people, most of whom I'd never met in my life, and most of whom didn't speak English, I realized what a great privilege I was experiencing. I, an outsider, was being treated like a member of their family.

This isn't a fantastic picture, but at 12:00am on New Year's we overlooked the city and watched the fireworks.

In a moment of prayer I knew that God may send me to strange, new, even uncomfortable places, but He will never leave my side.

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. – Galatians 4:4-5
